Kyren Wilson and Shaun Murphy Prepare to Lock Horns in 2025 Masters Final

After a week of thrilling action, the lineup for the 2025 Masters Final has been confirmed with former World and Masters Champion Shuan Murphy taking on the current World Champion Kyren Wilson. Wilson is looking to capture his first ever Masters crown.

Both men advanced to today’s showpiece courtesy of some brilliant snooker and both men will be extremely confident of winning today’s final and netting themselves a cool £350,000.

It was a day of upsets as world number 7 Shaun Murphy defeated world number four Mark Allen 6-3 to advance to the Masters final. In what was expected to be a close encounter between two men who certainly won’t be on each others Christmas card list, the match ebbed and flowed through the early stages with Murphy racing into a two frame lead, only to be pegged back by Allen who ensured the match would be tied at two frames apiece through the early stages.

In a fifth frame that turned into a cagey tactical battle it was Murphy who was able to produce some great defensive play to edge ahead 3-2, but it was in the sixth frame where we witnessed something truly special.

In his quarterfinal match against Mark Selby, Murphy had the opportunity to record only the sixth Masters 147 in history but after clearing all the reds, faltered when trying to find position on the blue, despite trying to fluke it in, he would end up missing and a chance to add his name to the record books, was lost.

However, he would make amends here.

With the balls looking ideally placed, seven time World Champion Stephen Hendry believed the maximum was on right from the outset of the frame and so that proved to be the case, dispatching the reds and blacks away with a minimal amount of fuss, Murphy reached the colours and ensured this time a mistake wouldn’t be made. Taking extra time when trying to put himself in position with the blue ball, his cueing was exemplary and his nerves held.

As the blue disappeared into the pocket, all that was left was to finish the job off with the pink and black. With the crowd holding its collective breath, Murphy rattled home both balls to send the Alexandra Palace into raptures.

Despite their differences off the table, Allen was quick to congratulate his old rival and it was clear how much the moment meant to Murphy who was clearly overcome with emotion.

Ensuring that he is likely to get his hands on the £15,000 bonus for making the highest break of the tournament, Murphy was able to compose himself and despite Allen battling hard to take the match the distance, the Magician was able to seal a memorable victory and reach his first Masters final since he won the event back in 2015.

Speaking after his victory Murphy declared, "I can't believe it. It was an incredible moment, one of the best of my snooker career, I have wanted to make a 147 in one of the BBC events since I was a child. I had a great opportunity the other day and totally messed it up. I had great support from the crowd, who were absolutely amazing."

Murphy has long been regarded as an extraordinary talent but in an era where Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, Mark Selby and now Judd Trump have all dominated, his career can be often overlooked. The winner of twelve ranking titles, he will bring in plenty of confidence as he looks for title number 13 in today’s final.

Despite a 2024 that saw him win the World Championship, Grand Prix and Northern Irish Open, Kyren Wilson started his semifinal against Judd Trump as the heavy underdog but was able to flip the script on its head as he blazed his way to his second Masters final with a stunning 6-3 victory.

Having been battle hardened in his run up to the semifinals with consecutive 6-4 wins over both Anda Zhang and Luca Brecel, the early stages of the contest against Trump seemed to be following a similar pattern and after five very nervy frames between the pair, it was Trump who was ahead 3-2.

Having lost the fifth frame which he was in control of, Wilson showed exactly why he is a World Champion with a break of 76 to capture the sixth frame and square the contest up at 3-3.

With Trump looking a little out of sorts and clearly feeling the pressure that Wilson was able to put him under, the world number one buckled and handed the initiative to the world number two. Showing little signs of nerves when it came towards heading towards the finish line, Wilson was able to win three consecutive frames with breaks of 88, 85 and century to close out the match in style.

Despite Trump setting a record in 2024 for the most amount of prize money won in a season, Wilson has been able to cling onto his coattails and certainly isn’t overawed by what Trump can bring to the table.

In their last six meetings the pair are now locked at three wins apiece and it could be argued that Wilson has won the bigger matches with yesterday’s victory and win in the Grand Prix Final.

He will head into the final against Murphy as the bookmaker’s favourite but he will have to overcome a poor head to head record against the Magician. Murphy has won four of the last five encounters between the duo and with Murphy playing as well as he has done in years he will certainly be confident of his chances today.

Wilson will be desperate to add to his World Championship crown but Murphy won’t let him have his own way. Today’s final could have the capacity to be a classic.
