About the Crucible Theatre

The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield has been the home of the World Snooker Championship since 1977. With a capacity of just 980 seats, it provides one of the most intimate and atmospheric venues in world sport. The famous one-table setup for the semi-finals and final creates an intensity unmatched in snooker.

The theatre has witnessed some of the greatest moments in snooker history — from Steve Davis's dominance in the 1980s, through Stephen Hendry's record seven titles in the 1990s, to Ronnie O'Sullivan's continued brilliance across three decades. Dennis Taylor's famous 18-17 final frame victory over Steve Davis in 1985 remains one of the most-watched sporting events in British television history, with 18.5 million viewers tuning in.

The Crucible's compact design means every break, every safety shot, and every moment of tension is amplified. It has become synonymous with snooker itself, and any discussion of the sport's greatest records inevitably leads back to this iconic Sheffield venue.
