Ronnie O'Sullivan Swaps Cues Mid-Match and Still Demolishes Opponent — Back Him to Go All the Way

The Pick

Back Ronnie O'Sullivan to win the 2026 World Championship at the Crucible. At the time of writing he's available at around 5/2 (3.50) with most major bookmakers — and frankly, that looks generous for a man who just dismantled a first-round opponent 10-2 while switching cues mid-match and still knocking in centuries for fun. Bet365, William Hill and Paddy Power all have competitive outright markets — shop around, but don't sleep on this one.

The Analysis

Let's be honest: most professional snooker players would treat changing their cue mid-tournament as a five-alarm crisis. For Ronnie O'Sullivan, it's apparently just a Tuesday. Or, more precisely, a Wednesday. The 50-year-old — seven-time world champion, living legend, occasional chaos merchant — turned up for the second session of his first-round match against Chinese debutant He Guoqiang wielding a completely different cue to the one he'd used the day before, and proceeded to rattle in breaks of 62, 113 and 100 inside an hour. The match finished 10-2, one of the most one-sided results of the 2026 World Championship so far.

The backstory here is fascinating and, if you're a punter, genuinely encouraging. O'Sullivan revealed after the match that he'd been preserving a back-up cue — or more specifically, its tip — specifically for Sheffield. His main cue's tip had been giving him trouble, most notably at the UK Championship in December where he lost in the opening round to Zhou Yuelong at the York Barbican, a defeat he partly attributed to not being able to play the shots he wanted. Rather than patch things up on the road, he essentially banked his reserve tip for the biggest stage of the season. "I've been saving this all year because it had a bit of life in it," he explained. By his own admission it was a gamble — "a roll of the dice" — but O'Sullivan being O'Sullivan, it paid off spectacularly.

What's particularly striking is the context around this tournament run. O'Sullivan has only played three events in 2026: a last-32 exit at the German Masters in January, a last-16 loss at the World Grand Prix in February, and a run to the World Open final in China in March — the same tournament where he compiled a break of 153, the highest in the history of professional snooker, courtesy of a free ball acting as a 16th red. He's been selective, he's been measured, and he's arrived at the Crucible in the kind of form that makes bookmakers nervous. He might cheekily refer to himself as 'Rusty Ron', but a 10-2 demolition job doesn't look remotely rusty from where I'm sitting.

The match against He Guoqiang — a 25-year-old making his Crucible debut — was always likely to be O'Sullivan's to control, but the manner of it matters. Two centuries in three frames is the kind of clinical, high-tempo snooker that wins tournaments. He even flirted with a 147 in the penultimate frame, potting nine reds and eight blacks before opting for a blue on his way to a 113. With a near-maximum thrown in almost casually, this was a performance to relish. A packed Crucible crowd — which included former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes in the stands — witnessed O'Sullivan at close to his imperious best.

Next up is a last-16 tie against John Higgins, a four-time world champion and no pushover. Higgins is always dangerous at the Crucible and this match will tell us far more about O'Sullivan's title credentials. But here's the thing — O'Sullivan now heads into that match with two functional cues and a choice of which tip to use. That's not a disadvantage. That's options.

The value, if there is any, is at Betfair Sportsbook at 3/1. For a player of O'Sullivan's calibre who is clearly in form, motivated, and now fully equipped in the cue department, that's a price worth taking. This is his 34th Crucible campaign and he's chasing an outright record of eight world titles — the extra one that would separate him from Stephen Hendry forever. Motivation isn't going to be an issue.
