Gilbert Shows His Class as Donaldson Also Books Stage Two Spot at Championship League

A Familiar Name Back in the Mix

There was a time, not so long ago, when David Gilbert looked like a player who could genuinely threaten the very best on any given week. The Tamworth cueman claimed the 2021 Championship League title and hinted, repeatedly, that a maiden ranking event triumph was just around the corner. The last couple of seasons, though, have been quieter — fewer deep runs, fewer headlines. So when Gilbert stepped onto the table at Morningside Arena in Leicester on Thursday, there was something quietly compelling about watching him rediscover that old authority.

He did not disappoint. Gilbert moved through Group 21 without a defeat, beginning his campaign with a composed 3-0 victory over women's world champion Panchaya Channoi, before sharing the points in a 2-2 draw with Mahmoud El Hareedy. When it mattered most, the 45-year-old delivered, seeing off fellow Englishman Ricky Walden 3-1 in the day's final fixture to clinch top spot and confirm his place in the last 32 of the competition.

Walden, a three-time ranking event winner himself, arrived at that deciding match still harbouring hopes of qualification — but he could not find the response he needed. It is a result that will sting. With tour survival potentially becoming a pressing concern for the Warrington potter as this season unfolds, every missed opportunity carries extra weight now. For Gilbert, though, this was precisely the kind of purposeful start a new campaign demands.

Donaldson Holds His Nerve in a Tight Group 20

If Gilbert's progress had a certain inevitability about it once he found his rhythm, the story unfolding in Group 20 was altogether more nerve-shredding. Scott Donaldson and Chinese prospect Yuan Sijun went into their head-to-head finale locked level on four points apiece, both having won once and drawn once from their opening matches. It was, in effect, a straight shootout for Stage Two.

The Scot showed admirable composure under pressure, winning 3-1 against the higher-ranked Yuan to claim first place in the group. It is the sort of result that says something about a player — Donaldson, who has never quite scaled the heights his talent has occasionally threatened, does not wilt in decisive moments. He joins Gilbert as the latest names to advance from Stage One, adding to a growing list that already includes Xu Si, Dylan Emery, Chang Bingyu, Ian Burns, Jackson Page, and Zhang Anda.

The Bigger Picture

Championship League Snooker serves as the opening ranking event of the 2026/27 season — a chance for players across the draw to stake an early claim for prize money, ranking points, and momentum. The stakes are not trivial. Whoever lifts the trophy on 15th July takes home £33,000 and, perhaps more enticingly, a coveted invitation to the Champion of Champions later in the year — one of the most prestigious invitational events in the calendar.

With 24 group winners still to be decided in Stage One, Friday brings another two groups into focus at Leicester. Gary Wilson headlines Group 14, where he will face Lyu Haotian, Alexander Ursenbacher, and amateur Duane Jones. Group 28, meanwhile, features He Guoqiang, Sean O'Sullivan, and Liu Yang, joined by amateur Dylan Smith — who has been drafted into the draw following the late withdrawal of Anthony McGill.

For now, Gilbert and Donaldson can focus on what comes next. Both will know that navigating Stage One is one thing; the last 32 and beyond is where reputations are genuinely tested. But on a Thursday afternoon in the East Midlands, with a new season barely days old, both men gave themselves — and their supporters — something to feel good about.
